Technical Practice and Research

Led by evidence-based research, the Technical Practice & Research function supports the LI in serving its members and landscape professionals with the materials, guidance and development of tools for best practice and principles in the landscape profession. Our work includes collaborative projects with partners and stakeholders, publications, technical papers, and training. We oversee the LI’s influence and engagement on technical matters, providing expert speakers, content and external representation.

Latest News

From early 2025 our focus has been on the development of our new Standing Committee, recruiting members, briefing them on the previous committee commitments, and the work that has been progressing in the interim.

Current projects include the Feasibility Study on an LVIA accreditation scheme, updating the LCA Database plus a next generation tool, and updating the Digital Plan of Works for Landscape. With a very successful Masterclass on Giving Evidence at Public Inquiries we will look to build activities and further training in this area.

Knowledge & Practice Committee

The K&PC provides leadership to the technical work of the LI, identifying and helping to deliver priorities for knowledge and practice work, and the LI objectives.

The committee sets up task and finish groups to work on specialist projects in line with a workplan. The K&PC had their first meeting on 16th June 25, and were straight into committee governance decisions appointing a deputy and council representative. Through the Summer they went on to support the Policy & Public Affairs Committee contributing to DEFRA’s BNG consultations and Ofgem’s RIIO-3 Draft Determinations, and providing a landscape element to NESO’s Energy Transmission Design Principles where work continues. The extensive Workplan includes creating groups to support the LI’s biodiversity work, the review of TGN 06/19 and evaluating existing groups. The committee has a full pipeline and a watching brief on numerous subjects such as digital skills, ZTV, plant health, soils and AI in addition to updating previous guidance and webpages.
