Leading on policy: Shaping the future of landscapes

At the Landscape Institute our Policy team plays a vital, role in advocating for a landscape-led approach to solving societal needs. We ensure this crucial approach is front and centre of public policy, regulatory frameworks, and decision-making across the UK and internationally.

Our strategic policy focus

Landscape professionals are essential for creating sustainable solutions. By leveraging the expertise of our members and drawing on the compelling evidence base for nature-positive solutions, we champion the pivotal role of our profession across all four UK nations (recognising that many policy areas are devolved).

Our current work focuses on the key areas below:

  • Sustainable Development: Promoting a landscape-led approach to built development to deliver cost-effectively for people, place, and nature. This includes influencing wider planning and design guides.
  • Nature Recovery & Resilience: Advocating integrated strategies that deliver Biodiversity Net Gain and ecological resilience, including promoting best practice in Sustainable Drainage Systems, nature-positive solutions, and natural flood management.
  • Quality Placemaking: Championing Green Infrastructure, parks, and community access to attractive and multi-functional green space.
  • Skills & Workforce: Working to ensure the landscape profession has the capacity and technical expertise required to deliver our national policy goals.

Policy & Public Affairs Committee

The Policy & Public Affairs Committee is central to the Landscape Institute’s mission. We champion the implementation of a landscape-led approach and provide the expert direction and oversight needed to position the LI as a leading voice in the sector. The Committee delivers a workplan approved by the LI Council to promote the value of landscapes via four key areas:

  • Public Policy: We work to influence government and parliamentary discussions on critical issues like climate resilience, nature recovery, and green/blue infrastructure.
  • Regulatory Frameworks: We help shape the standards and legislation that govern land use, planning, and environmental protection.
  • Decision-Making: We ensure the expertise of landscape professionals is integrated into high-level strategic decisions across all sectors.
  • Partnerships: We collaborate across the built and natural environment to achieve greater policy impact.

Working closely with the LI's other standing committees, we ensure that our policy messages are always grounded in sound technical and educational professional expertise.
