Landscape apprenticeships

The benefits of an Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships offer a hands-on, practical route into the landscape profession, combining paid work with structured learning. As an apprentice, you’ll gain real-world experience, technical skills, and industry insight while earning a salary and working towards a nationally recognised qualification.

You’ll learn from experienced professionals, develop your digital and design capabilities, and contribute directly to the creation of greener, healthier, and more sustainable places.

Key benefits include:

Is an apprenticeship right for you?

An apprenticeship could be the perfect choice if you:

  • Enjoy hands-on learning and creative problem-solving
  • Want to make a positive impact on people, place and nature
  • Prefer earning while studying rather than following a traditional academic route
  • Thrive in collaborative, project-based work
  • Are looking for a recognised route into the landscape profession

Apprenticeships are open to individuals of all ages and backgrounds, whether you’re just starting out or seeking a career change into a growing, future-focused sector.

Level 3 Landscape Technician Apprenticeship

The Level 3 Landscape Technician Apprenticeship is a two-year (24-month) programme that provides a structured, employer-connected entry route into the landscape profession.

Delivered in partnership between the Landscape Institute and Engineering Skills College (ESC), it combines workplace experience with expert-led teaching and a final End Point Assessment.

Apprentices learn to:

  • Conduct site surveys and environmental analysis
  • Use design software including CAD, BIM, and GIS
  • Develop plans, drawings, and specifications for landscape projects
  • Understand sustainability, biodiversity, and planning regulations
  • Support project delivery, aftercare, and client liaison

Professional recognition

Graduates of this programme meet the requirements for registration as a Landscape Technician (TMLI) with the Landscape Institute.

Programme details

  • Duration: typically 24 months
  • Funding: up to £9,000 per learner (government-supported)
  • Learning format: Remote online learning (one day per week) with a few in-person sessions
  • End Point Assessment: project report, presentation, and professional discussion

Entry requirements

Applicants typically need five GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above, including English and Maths, or have completed a Level 2 apprenticeship in a relevant discipline.

Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths must achieve this before taking the End Point Assessment. For those with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or a legacy statement, the minimum requirement is Entry Level 3, and British Sign Language qualifications can be accepted as an alternative to English for those for whom it is their primary language.

About our training provider

The Engineering Skills College (ESC) is the Landscape Institute’s official delivery partner for the Level 3 Landscape Technician Apprenticeship. Together, the LI and ESC provide a robust, high-quality programme that blends technical training with real-world experience, preparing apprentices to meet the demands of the modern landscape profession.

ESC delivers exceptional teaching through a mix of in-person workshops, virtual learning sessions, and workplace mentoring. Apprentices have access to industry-standard tools, software, and resources, including CAD, GIS, and digital design suites, ensuring they graduate with both practical and digital competencies.

In its most recent Ofsted inspection (October 2024), ESC achieved a Good rating across all areas, with Outstanding behaviour and attitudes. Inspectors praised its strong teaching standards, clear direction and support for learners, and commitment to continuous staff development.

Apprentices benefit from a supportive, professional learning environment where individual progress is prioritised. They learn in modern, well-equipped classrooms and workshops, guided by experienced tutors who bring current industry practice into every session.

ESC apprentices consistently achieve high success rates, with many earning merits or distinctions and progressing directly into full-time employment or advanced study. The college’s strong employer links also mean apprentices are often involved in live projects, community initiatives, and green infrastructure schemes that make a real impact.

This partnership ensures the apprenticeship meets the highest professional standards and connects learners directly with the heart of the industry. Apprentices automatically become Student Members of the Landscape Institute during their studies, gaining access to resources, events, and mentoring opportunities. On successful completion, they are eligible for Technician Membership (TMLI).

Together, ESC and the LI are helping to build a new generation of landscape professionals, equipped with the creativity, technical skill, and environmental understanding needed to shape sustainable places for the future.
