Education and skills: Building the professional pipeline

Welcome to the latest edition of Landscape

The latest edition of Landscape, the quarterly journal of the Landscape Institute, reflects the Landscape Institute’s commitment to aligning education, skills, policy and practice in a more coherent and strategic way.

A confident, capable profession is built over time through strong education, high standards, practical experience and sustained professional development. At a moment when landscape skills are central to national agendas in economic growth, housing delivery and sustainability, ensuring that our skills base is robust and future-ready is essential.

Working closely with our Education & Careers Committee (ECC) and the wider membership, we are strengthening the connection between professional practice, education, young people and career influencers, and advancing how members and Registered Practices can play an active role in shaping the future workforce.

Education is not a discrete entity; it is an integral part of the skills pipeline, labour market, long-term resilience of the sector and value we provide to society. Through collaboration with universities, colleges, employers and policymakers, we are seeking to grow the domestic talent pipeline, widen participation, support alternative pathways, and ensure that the skills developed reflect the realities of contemporary practice.

Central to this is collaboration. Registered Practices, educators and members across all career stages bring invaluable insight into emerging skills gaps, evolving modes of practice, and the competencies required for landscape-led delivery. By working together, we can ensure that education and careers programmes remain relevant, accessible and ambitious.

We encourage all members to engage with the Institute’s education and careers programmes, to offer placements and mentoring, to contribute expertise, and to help us build a resilient, inclusive and future-ready profession.
