Designing Shared Space

The term shared space, when applied to the mixing of pedestrians and vehicles in the public realm, means lots of different things to different people. This results in a confused debate of the subject area, exacerbated by the Department for Transport (DfT) issuing often conflicting statements, particularly over the course of 2018.

In this information note, David McKenna CMLI:
  • describes and define the different forms of shared space;
  • helps clarify the latest DfT position on shared space
  • outlines Inclusive Design issues
  • comments on some structural, layout and maintenance issues
This Note augments Technical Guidance regarding Inclusive Design
